The MBA Healthcare Management focuses particularly on management and healthcare as practised in hospitals and medical centres. The development of strategic thinking to be focused in this MBA Program, permits participants to approach complex organizational scenarios, and consequently gain market opportunities in the context of globalization of businesses towards gaining competitive advantage for the healthcare business.

Special attention will also be given to innovative methodologies to inculcate management techniques and strategies that would provide the means to overcome the challenges and competition expected in local and regional healthcare markets.

This program will inculcate business management skills covering marketing, accounting, research, understanding global business environment, financial policy and analyzing the impacts and changes in healthcare and medical technologies and innovations.

In the micro analysis, managers need to understand the operational strategies in managing the sources and assets of the business. From this point, MBA Healthcare Management will focus on the aspects of human resource management, financial management, management and cost accounting of healthcare in particular and hospital management in general.

Programme Objectives

  • to inculcate medical doctors, hospital managers and other qualified medical personnel in the application of knowledge of functional areas of business covering management, finance, marketing, strategic planning and human resource management, as they apply to healthcare;
  • to generate change in healthcare professionals who will gain competence in managing work culture transformations as they critically affect the effectiveness of managing healthcare organizations;
  • to generate in healthcare professionals the importance of effective organizational planning so that they are able to plan their healthcare businesses across varying economic conditions; and
  • to build strong business foundation in healthcare professionals who would be able to continuously acquire and apply new management knowledge and skills that are useful to manage healthcare organizations

MBA CORE

Being the key to effective management, these core courses focus upon building skills in technology management and innovation. The business foundation courses will also assist you understand the overall context of business and management.

Healthcare Technology Management & Innovation

This course places the concept of technology and technology management in perspective and deals with the strategies to manage innovation. This includes how to create product innovation and understanding its process. The course also discusses technology transfer.

Healthcare Management & Cost Accounting

Accounting and cost constitute the bases upon which all internal and external financial transactions are conducted. A thorough knowledge of accounting, its concept and practices therefore, is necessary for an effective financial control of any business. Financial, Management and Cost Accounting will be discussed in this course with implications on decision making.

Healthcare Strategic Financial Management

Healthcare organizations are torn between effective medical service for patients and organizational profitability. This is pertinent in view or the need to strategize their operations within the competitive healthcare market, especially for private hospitals. The objective of this course is to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of financial management as it relates to the overall strategy of healthcare organizations. Among others, this involves identification of financial decisions, evaluation of problems and deriving effective strategic financial moves

Healthecare Services Marketing

This course aims at understanding the concepts and tools for effectively marketing a service particularly healthcare, and how it can be used to develop and sustain competitive advantage within the industry. Healthcare as a service organization would require a distinctive approach to planning and implementing marketing strategy based on its relevant marketing mixes including price, delivery, product offer and the controversial legal specification of using promotional mix in the marketing of medical services. The emphasis is on the understanding of medical and healthcare service organizations on their dynamic market changes and then tailoring marketing goals and strategies accordingly.

Health Economics & Financing

This is an introductory course in health economics. Students will learn how to apply economic analysis of the health markets particularly examining the supply and demand of medical services in particular and healthcare in general. The course also emphasizes the importance of financing, as it relates to hospital and hospital care. As the government has important influences as a payer and regulator, considerable attention is devoted to the role of government, including the role of relevant agencies especially the Ministry of Health.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS

These courses will help you to apply both experiential learning and problem solving and analytical and decision–making skills to real everyday situations through project and case studies.

Strategic Healthcare Management & Planning

In this course, participants are given a foundation of basic strategy concepts for knowledge and applications both at the organizational and the strategic business unit (SBU) levels. The development of strategic thinking permits participants to approach complex organizational scenarios and opportunities from a larger perspective, particularly in the context of globalization of businesses, and with regard to business operational strategies as they relate to the overall corporate strategies of healthcare organization. This course will also focus on the development and implementation of marketing and implementation plans of its strategic business units according to the ever-changing global market environment.

Organisational Healthcare Human Resource Management

This course focuses on the importance of managing people in organizations. It is recognized that changes in the environment have great impact on people in organizations particularly when organizations need to sustain competitive advantage. Successful and effective management of human resources is as important for corporate success as any other management activity. This course will help students to link their personal situation and experience to general principles of human resources. Case studies will enable students to link theory and practice in human resource management.

Action Research in Health Organisation

It is imperative to uncover and resolve issues and problems within hospitals, which could be done through research. This course teaches students the techniques of doing research, beginning with identification and formulation of problems, date collection and processing, followed by analysis and drawing implications for decision-making. The course is an essential foundation for case studies of healthcare to be conducted at the end of the MBA program.

Healthcare Business Supply Chain

The growing global economy has redefined the dynamics of competition for modern organizations. With product life cycles shortening and worldwide rivalry increasing, success depends on effective supply chain management. This course is intended to help healthcare managers and their suppliers reduce operating costs and improve efficiencies throughout their supply chain. Optimizing supply chain performance in the healthcare industry requires a highly strategic approach, such that life cannot be taken for granted with a failed supply chain arrangement, such as Just-in-time inventory system.

Health Informatics

Quality will continue to be the most critical issue for businesses which aspire for excellence. This course will look at all aspects of quality in organizations and deals with the continuous change programmes to achieve organizational performance through appropriate change management strategies and implementation. This module treats QUALITY as the economic achievement of customer satisfaction and as such is a fundamental management objective.

Healthcare Creativity & Innovation

Information Technology is becoming increasingly important in the healthcare industry. Health or Clinical Informatics incorporates many fields of practices, which collectively are concerned with delivering health services, by making the best possible use of information supported by Information and Communication Technology (lCT). This course equips participants with a better understanding on how the Information System (IS) and ICT could facilitate the development, acquisition and use of innovative patient care service applications to improve overall healthcare performance for the benefits of different patients.

UNIVERSITY GENERAL ELECTIVE (UGE)

IT Project Management

This course offered by the Center for Advanced Software Engineering (CASE) deals with the application information technology in managing projects. In the present business environment, projects are  planned and executed with the use of information technology to gain speed and efficiency. The widespread use of information technology in business started when managers could organize their business operation strategy in a better fashion.

Organisation Behaviour & Development

This is a course that covers both organizational and group behavior in organizations. The scientific approach to behavior deals along the changing organizational paradigms within the context of organizational purpose, mission and strategies. In the same mannner, the organizational culture and diversity will be discussed along with the behavior of individuals and groups within the organization.

These courses will allow students to broaden their knowledge in specific business areas by cultivating critical business competencies. This includes subjects required to apply management knowledge in healthcare.

MASTER PROJECT

Case Study of Healthcare

This is a practical project where students apply the research methodology techniques (survey, case study, experimentation, participant observation, etc) to investigate known healthcare management problems within or outside the organization, towards arriving at a specific solution or work improvement. The project paper will be taken towards the end of the study program, although students could start formulating the research problem and methodology as early as when they start the program.

An MBA constitutes a major investment in terms of cost and time since students have to balance the responsibilities of a demanding position with the need to master management competencies. Their choice of an appropriate MBA programme must therefore be correct in order that the incidence of opportunity loss may be obviated.

Whilst there are indeed many MBA Programmes available today, these programmes are precisely geared to garner maximum gains for the students with quality courses.

The minimum entry requirements are as follows;

  1. An honours degree from UTM or other recognized universities or an equivalent academic qualification from an overseas establishment approved by the university Senate. Certain professional qualifications will also be considered.
  2. At least two years post-qualification working experience.
  3. An English Certificate of IELTS/TOEFL (International applicants only)

REQUIREMENT FOR ALL INTERNATIONAL POSTGRADUATE STUDIES APPLICANTS
All international students applying to MBA programme must have an English Certificate of IELTS or TOEFL. Only graduates from the countries listed at this link are exempted from English language requirement and can be allowed to enroll in a faculty programme: The minimum band score required in order to be considered to the programme are:

INTENSIVE ENGLISH COURSE
However, students who get ADMISSION with a lower score and do not meet the entry requirement will have to attend and pass IEC for at least one semester or up to two semesters (a year) depending on his/her entry level and performance. All students are required to attend and pass IEC first before being allowed to register for their postgraduate programme.

STRUCTURE OF IEC PROGRAMME
IEC comprises of four modules – Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking, and Self-Access Language Learning with a total of 22 contact hours a week. The course adopts the skill-based approach where all the four language skills are given due emphasis in the classroom. The Self-Access Language Learning allows students, on their own, to use the facilities in the state-of-the-art digital language laboratory for language learning. In addition, a Fieldwork/Seminar module is included. This module exposes students to the Malaysian culture, history and development through experiential learning outside the classroom.

FEE

The fee for attending IEC is RM3,900.00 per semester.(RM3500 for subsequent semesters).
